Barclay Brothers Show Interest In Mirror Titles

It is believed that the Barclay brothers, who own The Scotsman and The European, have shown an interest in buying the Mirror Group’s Scottish titles.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Frederick Barclay is reported to have said that they are interested in the Mirror Group, and particularly its Scottish interests. Mirror holds a 20% stake in Scottish Media Group (SMG).

Against speculation, Mirror last week denied that it was planning on disposing of its SMG interests. The Scottish papers (the Daily Record and the Sunday Mail), could perhaps be sold off separately though.

Mirror Group says that it will consider any offer at the right price for SMG; the same may be true of the newspapers.

The future of SMG and the Scottish papers has been thrown into the spotlight after the collapse of talks of a takeover of Mirror Group by German publisher Axel Springer last week (see Springer Abandons Mirror Move).
