Regional Publishers Again Urged To Use The Internet

Simon Gray, media development director for Newsquest Media Group, has called for regional publishers to exploit the full potential of the internet.

Newsquest is currently working with Northcliffe Newspapers and has created four websites under the ‘This Is’ brand. Northcliffe is planning to launch two similar sites each week to create 17 of these ‘communities’.

Gray points towards opportunities in transactions, shopping, catalogues, auctions, travel and site design as well as banner ads and sponsorship as key growth areas for publishers.

He said: “Audience measurement began with hits and moved onto page impressions, but we should start talking in terms of audience and audience share as we see the impact of digital and set top boxes.”

Gray’s views echo those delivered to the Newspaper Society Forum earlier this week where publishers were urged to use their brands and core strengths on the internet (see Regional Newspapers Should Use Internet For Revenue, Says NS).
