NMTV – A New Era In European Broadcasting?

An new internet-TV venture that could threaten free, controlled distribution business press has been set up with £4.5 million of private investment. The company, NMTV, is described by its chief executive, Rob Lewis, as, “a new era in European broadcasting, marking Europe’s first and only internet-based business TV network.”

NMTV plans to fire personalised, cutting-edge business news to workers desktops via the internet. The company has recruited 40 experienced journalists who will attend press conferences with their laptops and upload the information back to the company’s headquarters in Chelsea. This news will then be placed over 40 industry-specific channels on the internet.

Lewis claims that research conducted for NMTV by Research Business International showed that controlled circulation business and IT magazines “no longer deliver value to advertisers or readers.” He also says that most industry professionals are receiving around 30 of these magazines a month, and do not have the time to read them.

NMTV’s service threatens these publications by promising to provide information daily, as opposed to monthly. The different content channels on the NMTV site will each have a sponsor.

“NMTV aims to be at the vanguard of desktop delivery of personalised information. Sponsors need the ability to target an audience accurately and properly measure their campaign’s success,” says Lewis.

TV-style broadcasts of around three minutes will be sent across the internet with accompanying text reports holding greater detail. At NMTV’s launch, scheduled for the end of July, the service will concentrate on news for IT decision makers. Later, the service plans to roll out to cover other areas of business.
