IT: New labelling provisions

IT: New labelling provisions

Italian politicians are currently considering legislation that would impose upon wine producers new labelling requirements which would bear health warnings similar to those already carried by cigarette packets. It is not immediately clear if the proposal will run into trouble with the Commission but it appears, prima facie, to infringe EC regulations aimed at maintaining free movement of goods within the single market. The new law would also introduce other restrictions, including:

  • prohibition on sales of wine and spirits at motorway service stations between 10am and 6pm
  • the banning of the use of spirits at workplaces
