Following the decision earlier this month to axe the channel and move it wholly online, BBC Three has today announced new comedy commissions.
Alongside recommissions of Bad Education, Bluestone 42 and Some Girls, the channel will play host to a new six part comedy, 600 Days, which will focus on an “unlikely couple” that end up on the wrong side of the law, as well as an action comedy pilot about police detectives called Top Coppers.
Earlier this month – and to the protest of many people across the nation – director general Tony Hall announced that the BBC’s flagship youth and comedy channel would be moving entirely online where a large proportion of its programming already premiers, in a bid to save the Corporation money.
However, the news has seemingly not deterred the channel from developing its portfolio of comedy programming, which began over a decade ago.
Commenting on the new commissions, BBC Three Controller, Zai Bennett, said: “BBC Three is at the heart of new comedy in the UK and is not only still on air, but thriving.
“These four deliciously different and brilliantly written series and pilot demonstrate our ongoing commitment to bring our viewers more even more cutting edge, exciting and most importantly of all, funny, comedy this year.”
Shane Allen, controller of comedy commissioning, added: “This raft of new and returning comedy series celebrates how successful the comedy on Three remains and is a timely reminder that we’re still very much open for comedy business.”
