Channel 4 To Apologise For Against Nature Series

The Independent Television Commission (ITC) has said that Channel 4 must broadcast an on-screen apology to four environmentalists who were interviewed for the channel’s recent series Against Nature. The ITC claims that the views of these interviewees were distorted and misrepresented.

The ITC has upheld complaints from the four contributors to the series about the way their views had been presented. The complainants were Lord Melchett, chief executive of Green Peace; Dr. Barbara Maas of Pan-African Wildlife Conservation Network UK; Tony Juniper, campaigns director for Friends of the Earth, and Professor Norman Myers of Green College, Oxford.

The ITC says that comparisons between the unedited interviews and the versions that were broadcast, showed that the views had been distorted by selective editing. The interviewees had also been misled as to the content and purpose of the programmes when they agreed to take part.

The Broadcasting Standards Commission also received a number of complaints about Against Nature, with viewers saying it offended standards of taste and decency (subscribers see EastEnders Receives 16 Complaints For Spina Bifida Storyline).
