Acquisition Boosts Johnston Figures

Regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press today announced a 43% increase in annual pre-tax profits to £34.6 million on the back of turnover up from £165m to £212m. These figures include the first full contributions from the EMAP regional titles which Johnston acquired in 1996 (subscribers see EMAP Sells Titles For £205m).

Advertising revenues grew strongly, increasing 8% to £143m, as a result of a sustained advance in job advertising which rose by 30%. There was also a 20% increase in national run-of-paper advertising.

Johnston said that the buoyant conditions were experienced in all marketplaces though with some regional variations. Growth was at its strongest in the South Midlands Division which benefited from “dynamic” economic conditions though demand was also high in the Scottish market. The lowest rate of growth was experienced in the North Midlands division.
