ITV Plans £1 Million Game Show
ITV told the Montreux Golden Rose Festival yesterday that it is planning the launch of a new game show with a prize of £1 million. The show, to be called Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, is hoping to provide competition to the BBC’s National Lottery coverage.
ITV claims that the programme will be upmarket and will not rely on hysteria-inducing tactics in order to gain viewers. It is likely that the move to continually up the monetary stakes in game shows will provoke questions on the morality of the technique.
The programme is to be produced by Celador Productions, although a presenter has not yet been decided upon. The £1 million prize, which is only to be won once in a series, will be drawn from the programme’s own budget.
