TV Viewing Summary W/E 12/04/98
The Easter Weekend this year brought us the departure of Kaff Mitchell of the Caff. Eastenders pushed itself to four episodes, including a one hour special on Good Friday. Kaff’s final bow has to be one of the most drawn out departures in recent soap history; even Hilda Ogden seemed to slip silently into the night in comparison. Overall Eastenders scored an average audience figure of 13.50 million, not very much higher than usual. Friday’s episode was watched by 15.17 million. Just think, all those people wasting their time, when they could have been watching D.I.Y. at home with Ron ‘Dicko’ Dickson.
Brookside‘s best disaster since the religious cult bomb seems to have been rather overlooked (only 2.29 million viewers); still it’s usually the aftermath that attracts more viewers than the actual event. Following this up with five nightly episodes in the week after should secure Brookie’s highest audiences of the year so far.
New Drama came in the form of The Scold’s Bridle shown over two nights on BBC1 (9.33 and 8.67 million viewers respectively). ITV’s response was the adaption of Coming Home which fared much better with 11.73 million viewers tuning in.
LWT provided ITV with one of the twotop light documentaries of the week. The ever popular Airline was watched by 12.44 million. Granada worked on ‘variations of a theme’ with Builders From Hell (10.27 million) usurping the usual place of Neighbours From Hell (9.09 million).
Channel 5 treated us to the full series of V, shown over three nights attracting an average audience of 1.07 million. Its top audience of the week came from the film Silent Thunder (1.80 million).
