Curved TV shipments are forecast to reach six million by the end of 2017, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch TV Design and Features report.
The research forecasts that curved TV units will reach nearly 800,000 this year, with growing shipments of OLED TVs expected to boost curved TV sales through to 2017.
“The novelty of curved screens is expected to wear off with time, leading to shipments peaking and then trailing off,” said Paul Gray, director of European TV research for NPD DisplaySearch.
“Even so, curved TV screens will have completed the important task of differentiating new high-end models, thereby helping to boost overall value in the global television market.”
In addition to curved screens, NPD notes that TV manufacturers are leveraging other technologies to increase TV sales. OLED TVs still face “significant manufacturing problems” and are forecast to ship 100,000 units at most this year, with annual shipments exceeding just one million in 2016.
Shipments of 4K televisions, however, are expected to increase significantly over the next few years, rising from 12 million in 2014 to 62 million in 2017.
