Chrysalis To Buy Birmingham’s Choice FM

Birmingham dance music radio station, Choice FM, is to be bought by Chrysalis Radio, owners of the Galaxy and Heart series of stations, for £6 million.

Chrysalis already owns 100.7 Heart FM in Birmingham and so the takeover will undergo a public interest test to be conducted by the Radio Authority. The takeover will also be subject to competition considerations by the Office of Fair Trading.

For Chrysalis, the acquisition is an opportunity to extend the group’s Galaxy brand into the Midlands, boosting the Galaxy network coverage by almost 25% and increasing its market share in Birmingham by 23% to 14%.

Choice 102.2 FM’s latest listening figure, for the quarter 4 1997 RAJAR period, gave the station an average weekly reach of 140,000 listeners. The station has a target audience of 15-34 year olds.
