England’s Epic Defeat Gains 26m Viewers

The agonising World Cup defeat of England by Argentina after a penalty shootout last night was watched by a peak audience of 26 million according unofficial overnight figures. This, according to ITV, is the highest ever number of people tuning into a television programme on any single channel. The game achieved an average audience of 23.6 million viewers.

The second half and extra time gained a Men TVR which peaked at 55.1 and averaged 49.8. TVR for Women stood at an average of 41.7; Individuals TVR averaged 43.3 and peaked at 47.6.
