The figures also show that overall consumer magazines’ circulation has increased by 17% in the last five years. National newspapers, on the other hand, have suffered a loss in circulation of more than 3%; regional paid-for papers declined by almost 15% in the same five year period.

Advertising growth for the sector has increased accordingly in 1997: consumer mags share of total advertising market reached 5.7%. Phil Cutts, head of marketing at the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), said: “Circulations within consumer magazines have been buoyant throughout the nineties and this is now being translated into a growth in magazines’ slice of the advertising cake. The confidence in the consumer magazine market is also forecast to continue with the Advertising Association predicting that it will be the fastest growing press medium in 1998 and 1999.”
