Johnston Press and Home Counties Newspapers must submit their arguments for a takeover to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission by March 9.
The Government blocked the £52 million agreed takeover of Home Counties Newspapers by Johnston Press two weeks ago (subscribers see Johnston’s Agreed Newspaper Takeover Blocked). The MMC will report back to the Department of Trade and Industry by 24 April and their verdict is expected to be announced towards the end of May.
Speculation is also mounting that other regional press bidders are approaching HCN with offers for its titles.
