New York Times launches new subscription product

The New York Times has launched NYT Opinion, the first digital product to offer a standalone subscription to all of The Times‘ opinion coverage, alongside a continuous feed of commentary from around the web.

For $6 a month, subscribers will have unlimited access to the new NYT Opinion app, which is to become just one of a number of paid products The Times will be introducing this year in a bid to “satisfy demand for deeper access to specific areas of coverage and to expand digital subscriptions.”

The new app features two primary streams of information: ‘Today’, which includes all articles from the opinion section at NYTimes.com, and ‘Op-Talk’, which is a curated stream of commentary from around the web, selected by a new staff of Times editors and writers. It also includes ‘My Reads’, which lets readers save articles to read later.

In the coming weeks, a ‘Follow’ feature will be introduced which will allow users to follow their favourite columnists, as well as a ‘Q&A’ feature where columnists will be able to respond to readers’ questions and comments.

“The communal nature of the Internet and the rise of social media have allowed for more vibrant discussion of The Times‘ opinion pieces,” said Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor of The Times.

“With the introduction of NYT Opinion and the new features we have added to the Opinion section on NYTimes.com, we hope to lead more engaged readers to our content and provide an even deeper connection to our columnists and the global conversation.”

The NYT Opinion app is available for iPhone is free to download from the App Store. All existing core digital and home delivery subscribers and Times Premier subscribers will also have free unlimited access, while non-subscribers will be able to scan headlines and article summaries and have access to up to 10 free articles each month.
