Broadcasting Act Digital Radio Provisions Begin
Media Secretary Chris Smith has announced the commencement of the digital radio provisions of the Broadcasting Act 1996.
This effectively means that the three independent national radio licensees (Classic FM, Talk Radio and Virgin Radio) will have to notify the Radio Authority by 28 February 1998 if they want to transmit their services on the digital national commercial multiplex. These stations have a guaranteed place on digital radio and they are expected to wish to use it.
Chris Smith has also said that the holders of the digital national commercial multiplex licence will not have to pay multiplex revenue to the Exchequer during the first licence period.
