C5 Viewing Share Reaches 3.5%

The latest IPA Trends in Television Report, for the fourth quarter of 1997, reveals that C5’s viewing share has increased to 3.5%, up 0.4% points on the previous period. The channel also went through the 40% weekly patronage barrier.

While TV viewing remained at a constant average of 3.59 hours per day for 1997, both ITV and Channel 4 lost viewing share. ITV’s all individual’s consolidated share for Q4 1997 stood at 32.6%, down from 35.1% in Q4 1996, and C4’s was 10.4%, compared to 10.6% the previous year. Non terrestrial channels saw their viewing share rise from 10.7% for Q4 1996 to 12.1% for Q4 1997.

In terms of the top 20 programmes for the week ended 30 November, both ITV and BBC1 provided 10 for all adults. For ABC1 Adults however, ITV provided 4 compared to BBC1’s 16, while for DE Adults ITV had 14 compared to BBC1’s 6.
