CMT Europe To Close

Gaylord Entertainment has announced that it will be closing its CMT Europe cable network on 31 March 1998. The US company said that the 24-hour cable country music channel was “unprofitable.”

Carl Kornmeyer, president of Gaylord’s Communications Group, said: “CMT’s format of providing country music videos via satellite 24-hours-per-day has resulted in losses of about $10 million annually over the past two years.”

The company said, however, that it was still interested in taking country music programming to Europe and had noted the way the Sci-Fi Channel had used branded block programming to build its overseas networks.
