Ofcom advertises new national radio multiplex licence

Ofcom is today advertising a licence to run a second national digital radio ‘multiplex’, which will expand the number of digital radio stations and provide more choice for listeners.

The new multiplex – the airwaves needed to broadcast digital radio stations – will allow around 10 new national Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio services to broadcast to UK listeners.

The first national radio multiplex, operated by Digital One, is currently at full capacity as the number of DAB stations available has risen from four to 14 in the last five years.

36.6% of all radio listening is now on a digital radio and over 90% of UK adults tune into the radio each week.

Commenting on the announcement, Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK, said: “We welcome the advertisement by Ofcom for this new national network of stations on DAB as this will increase the additional station choice on DAB and could lead to further innovation and creativity.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, added: “Drivers are taking to digital radio in ever greater numbers. Over half of all new cars sold now come with digital radio as standard and, with a range of affordable after-market products now available, all drivers will be able to enjoy the wider range of stations now available on this ever-expanding network.”

The closing date for receiving applications is 3.00pm on 30 October 2014. Full details for applying for the licence can be found on the Ofcom website.
