BDB Snubs Murdoch In Decoder Choice

British Digital Broadcasting, the UK consortium which will be launching digital terrestrial television in the Autumn, has chosen SECA to provide the set-top box encoder which will allow viewers access to its channels.

This is a blow to Rupert Murdoch who hoped BDB would choose the News Datacom system, which is owned by his News Corporation company. It is also bad news for BSkyB because the SECA box will not initially be able to receive digital satellite TV. BSkyB is understood to be considering legal action against BDB because they see the choice of the SECA system as restricting consumer choice.

As the SECA system stands at the moment, viewers wishing to receive satellite services via the box will need to buy a satellite dish and a ‘low-cost’ adaptor.
