EU: ICC Considers Self-Regulation

The ICC’s Marketing Commission has produced an “Issues Paper” discussing the ill-fated International Council of Marketing Practice (ICMP). The paper admits that the ICMP “has reviewed a very small number of cases” since its inception in the 1970s and appears to suggest that one reason for making it operational is that it is referenced in a number of the ICC’s existing codes of practice. The paper also discusses the existing charges for bringing a complaint; suggests that advertising lawyers and consumer advocates could be considered as members of the ICMP; and considers enforcement and compliance issues. No specific proposals are made, and comments are requested by 10 March 1998. A copy of the Issues Paper is available from the UK Advertising Association.
