ITC Ruling Forces BSkyB To Share Sky Sports 2

A ruling by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) yesterday will force BSkyB to share its sports channel, Sky Sports 2, with ONdigital. The news will end months of wrangling between the digital rivals over sports rights (see Digital TV Wrangles Continue Over Sky Sports 2).

The ruling comes from the results of a review of the digital points system by the ITC, announced yesterday, which declared the total number of points in the digital universe to be 47. The system was designed to prevent one broadcaster from dominating the platforms and allocates points to each digital programme service on digital terrestrial television. The allocation of more points to the universe as a whole means that BSkyB now has no excuse for withholding its sports service from its rival.

ONdigital released a statement today in response to the review: “The ITC ruling is great news for our customers. Now ONdigital is able to offer its customers the full range of the best sports available on any platform.”
