Digital One And The BBC Unite In Digital Push

Digital One, the only commercial digital radio multiplex to operate on a national basis, has joined forces with BBC Digital Radio to push the introduction of digital provision. In the deal, struck yesterday, the two rival groups will collaborate on a range of marketing and research initiatives.

The main aim of this long-term partnership is to pool the promotional assets of both companies to advance the growth of digital radio. They will work together on initiatives with manufacturers and retailers and to devise joint consumer marketing plans. Their plans also include establishing a common digital audience measurement system.

Digital One, which is owned by GWR and NTL, is to launch its service on November 15 this year, offering ten national commercial digital stations. It won the license last year as the only applicant to tender. The BBC already runs a digital service which reaches over 60% of the population.

Digital One’s Chief Executive Quentin Howard said: “Digital One and the BBC share a similar view of how the digital radio market will evolve, especially in the early years. Together we are responsible for all national digital radio. And together we make for a very powerful partnership, combining the public service strengths of the BBC with the commercial experience and freedom of Digital One.
