Eastern Counties Pulls Sales Out Of Amra

Regional newspaper publisher, Eastern Counties Newspapers (ECN), has moved all its national and provincial advertising sales out of Amra and into rival sales group, Clacksons. The move follows ECN’s £58.3 million acquisition of Home Counties Newspapers (HCN) in April 1998 (see Home Counties Surprise Sell To Eastern); Clacksons already handles sales for HCN.

ECN’s newspapers have a total weekly circulation of 2.7 million copies, across 54 titles, making it the eighth largest regional newspaper publisher in the UK. Its titles include the Hampstead & Highgate Express, the East Anglian Daily Times and the Ipswich Mercury. It has been reported that ECN became unhappy with Amra’s representation following its takeover by Trinity in November last year (see Trinity Acquires Amra).

Commenting on the loss of business, Amra’s chief executive, Mike McCormack, says: “As always, Amra’s key concern remains the continued prosperity of the medium as a whole and we will press on with ensuring that all our publishers receive their full measure of national advertising on the back of the significant readership that Amra delivers to advertisers.

A spokesperson for Amra said that the changeover of ECN’s titles will not take place this month, as had been reported, but is still under discussion. Amra says that staff who worked on the ECN titles will be found new positions within the company’s portfolio.
