ITV Secures Formula One Rights Until 2006
ITV has secured the television broadcasting rights for Formula One motor racing for the seasons 2002 to 2005 inclusive. The deal with the Formula One Administration (FOA) gives ITV live coverage of each race on Sundays, as well as live broadcasts of the Saturday qualifying sessions. Highlights of the races will continue to be shown on Sunday evenings.
ITV won the TV rights to Formula One racing from the BBC in 1995 (see ITV Wins Formula One From BBC), but its coverage of the sport did not begin until the 1997 season. Commenting on the new contract, ITV chief executive, Richard Eyre, said: “The new deal underlines ITV’s continuing commitment to bringing its viewers the very best in top quality sport.” ITV also has the television rights to UEFA Champions League football and the current Rugby World Cup.
Separately, Channel 4 has signed up a raft of US programmes for its 2000 schedule. Action, a new satire of the American film industry will be premiered in the UK on Channel 4 next year. C4 has also bought Futurama, a new animated series by Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, and Family Guy another critically acclaimed animation. The station has also renewed its exclusive deals for Sex In The City and The Sopranos.
