New Manchester Paper To Be Free Title
The new morning newspaper for Manchester is to be called Metro and is to be a free title. The paper is due to begin trialling next week before its launch in the new year.
The title is being published by the Guardian Media Group (GMG), which owns the city’s local evening paper, the Manchester Evening News. The group also publishes a weekly free paper called Manchester Metro News. The launch of a new daily paper was announced earlier this year by GMG (see Guardian To Launch Manchester Morning Paper).
The Manchester Evening News has also announced it is to develop a free-to-air youth lifestyle television channel called Channel M. The venture is a joint initiative with the University of Salford’s media department and Clear Channel International, which will handle its advertising operations. On a restricted service licence it will broadcast a range of programming partly produced by students from the university on a wide range of subjects including cooking, music and sex.
