ITV Scores Top Ratings For England-Scotland Match

ITV achieved top ratings for its live coverage of last night’s England V Scotland Euro 2000 qualifier. Estimated overnight figures show that the game attracted an average audience of 15.6 million which represents a 57% share of total viewing at that time. Viewing figures peaked at almost 18 million, according to the ITV Network.

The ITV Nightly News on the same night also recorded its highest viewing figures to date, with 5.6 million tuning in. The programme has been under the spotlight recently with industry observers, including culture secretary Chris Smith, voicing concern over the ITV’s removal of News At Ten (see Smith Urges ITC To Perform Rigorous Review Of New ITV Schedule).

Overall the channel achieved a peak-time audience share of 55%, compared to BBC1 which took an 18.3% peak-time share.
