Future Acquires Football Magazines

Future Network announced today that it has acquired the worldwide licence to publish the official magazines for Manchester United and Chelsea football clubs. The specialist publisher, which owns titles including PC Review and Total Football, is to buy Manchester United Magazine, Glory Glory Man United and the Official Chelsea Football Club Magazine from Zone Publishing.

The acquisition will make Future the biggest publisher of monthly football magazines in the UK, with sales exceeding 175,000 copies.

Jane Ingham, managing director of Future Publishing UK, said: “This deal greatly strengthens our presence in the football market in the UK and we will be seeking opportunities to establish similar positions in other overseas markets. These club-specific magazines will benefit from being part of the same portfolio as Total Football, but will also benefit from being alongside Future’s other leading titles in mountain biking, video games and computers…which [have] a similar target audience.”

Future Networks saw pro forma sales increase by 24% to £86 million but continued investments created a £6 million pre-tax loss for the company in its maiden results since its flotation in June.
