EE reaches 7.7 million 4G customers

EE added a record 5.7 million 4G customers in 2014, with 1.7 million in the last two months alone. The additions beat the 6 million year-end target, with EE claiming that is has now added more 4G customers than any other operator in Europe.

During the year, EE added 350 more cities and towns to its 4G network, bringing the total to 510 covered UK towns and cities with populations of 10,000 and above. 4GEE now covers more than 80% of the population, with EE saying that it is on target to reach 98% by the end of 2015.

EE also added more than 1,000 villages and small towns in the last few months of 2014, taking the total to almost 3,900. The smallest connected village is Elvanfoot, South Lankarshire, which has 52 residents.

BT Group is currently in negotiations to buy EE for £12.5 billion. If the deal goes ahead, BT would own the UK’s largest 4G network, picking up more than 24 million direct mobile customers.

EE reported adjusted EBITDA of £1,588 million for the 12 months to 30 June 2014.
