Talk Radio To Buy Oyston Station

Talk Radio is in negotiations to buy Morecambe-based radio station, The Bay, for an expected £3.5 million. Talk’s negotiations for the station, which has 110,000 listeners a week, are understood to be exclusive.

The Bay is owned by media and football club owner, Owen Oyston, who was jailed for rape in 1997. In April last year the Radio Authority transferred Oyston’s ownership of the station, along with three others, to independent trusts. The other stations, Heartbeat 1521 AM, Gold Beat and City Beat 96.7, are also being offered to Talk’s owners TalkCo, although The Bay is understood to be of primary interest to Talk.

An outcome of the exclusive discussions for The Bay could come within a month. An industry source estimates that all four stations together would be valued in the region of £5 million to £6 million. Talk Radio’s chief executive, Kelvin MacKenzie, entered discussions with the trust that holds the stations after a management buy-out offer for The Bay failed.
