Business Usage Of The Net Is On The Increase
UK companies are increasingly using the internet to conduct business, rather than merely as a communication tool, according to the UK Internet Survey 1999 by Fletcher Research. The survey has found that 41% of sites are now using the web to raise or save money online; this compares to 35% in 1998.
Advertising is the dominant model of making money online (51%), with selling goods and services accounting for 39% of websites which generate their own revenue. Almost all of the companies surveyed plan to increase their spend on internet services this year – 34% expect their budget to be more than doubled in 1999.
The survey also found that all transactional and most advertising-funded sites plan to advertise in 1999, most at a higher rate than during 1998. However, the report also notes that very few corporate websites are actually paying for themselves at present. Only 27% report having revenues of over £10,000 per month.
Commenting on the survey, William Reeve, Fletcher’s research director, said: “Leading UK companies seem to be moving away from having a site merely to keep up with the Joneses and are trying to capture the enormous potential offered by the web. So the funding of new media departments is turning from a trickle into a flow.”
