BSC Tackles More Channel 4 Gay Drama Controversy

For the second time this week, Channel 4’s gay drama Queer As Folk is in the spotlight causing controversy. The Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) received 138 complaints about the series according to its latest bulletin.

Complainants were concerned about the portrayal of homosexuality in the series, explicit sexual scenes, drug use and bad language. The BSC upheld the complaints in part, unlike the Independent Television Commission (ITC) which did not take any action against the series (see Newsline). The Breakfast News on BBC 1 was also penalised by the watchdog for including a clip from the series, which the Commission decided was inappropriate for that time of transmission.

Other programmes which ran into trouble included Radio 1 shows by Chris Moyles and Mark Radcliffe, both of which were pulled up by the watchdog for offensive remarks.
