CE Digital Wins Manchester Digital Radio Licence

The Radio Authority (RA) has awarded the local digital radio multiplex service for the Manchester area to CE Digital. The group, which is a 50:50 venture by Emap and Capital Radio, was the only bidder for the licence in April (see Newsline).

CE Digital is planning to broadcast a total of eight programme services in the Manchester area from the following providers: Key 103, Magic FM, Kiss FM, Lite FM, Talk Radio, XFM and Asian Sound Radio. The BBC local radio station for this area will also be simulcast – BBC GMR. The licence will run for twelve years and CE Digital plans to begin broadcasting in May 2000.

CE Digital was also awarded the digital radio local multiplex for the Birmingham area last month (see Newsline), for which it was also the sole bidder.
