Sky to launch new “Netflix-style” set-top-box within weeks

Sky is set to unveil a new set-top box – dubbed SkyQ – in the next few weeks promising an improved user experience.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Sky will offer satellite households an “Apple and Netflix-style” experience, moving on from the grid-style guide that Sky first developed back in 1998.

SkyQ, developed under the codename “Project Ethan”, is understood to allow subscribers to watch and record at least four programmes simultaneously on multiple devices throughout the home – and will allow content to be cast to other devices.[advert position=”left”]

It will also support ultra-high definition (4K) broadcasts.

An industry source told the Telegraph SkyQ presents content on a carousel in a “much more visual” format than on the current Sky HD+ box and the software will learn viewers’ preferences to make suggestions of programmes they might like.
