GWR Acquires Plymouth Sound For £5.3 Million

The GWR Group has today announced the acquisition of Plymouth Sound, which operates an AM and FM licence in the South West.

GWR, owner of Classic FM, bought the group for £5.28 million from The Local Radio Company (TLRC). GWR already had an interest in Plymouth Sound through its 20% holding in TLCR. Plymouth Sound’s two licences cover an area of over 330,000 adults, and the group also has a 45% stake in South Hams Radio, which has just been awarded the licence for the South Hams area by the Radio Authority (see Newsline).

Ralph Bernard, chief executive of GWR, commented: “Earlier this year, the acquisition of the four Orchard Media stations for £25.6 million was a major extension of GWR’s operations into the West Country [see Newsline]. The addition of Plymouth Sound means that the Group now covers most of the South West including Cornwall.”
