Capital/EMAP Consortium Bids For Manchester Digital Radio Licence

Yesterday was the closing date for applications for the local digital multiplex radio licence for the Manchester area, which was advertised by the Radio Authority towards the end of last year (see Newsline).

The RA received just one application for the digital service, from CE Digital, the 50:50 joint venture set up by EMAP and Capital Radio. CE Digital’s proposal included eight broadcast services for the Manchester area, provided by the likes of XFM (Capital), Talk Radio (with the Guardian Media Group) and Kiss FM (EMAP) on a 24 hour basis.

The Manchester licence will deliver digital radio programming and data services to an area with an adult population of 2.45 million, and the RA hopes to announce its decision on the award of the licence on 3 June.

CE Digital also submitted the sole application for the Birmingham digital radio licence (see Newsline), and will be applying for the London digital licence, which was advertised in January, in a few weeks. Licences for Glasgow and South Yorkshire have also been advertised, but CE Digital has yet to decide whether to submit applications for these.

The Radio Authority awarded the single national digital multiplex to Digital One last year (see Newsline).
