TV Viewing Summary W/E 27/06/99
ITV’s latest attempt at situation comedy has got off to an impressive start, despite the critical mauling it received: 9.8 million people tuned in to watch the first episode of Barbara. It will be interesting to see if the show can maintain these figures considering the fairly negative reviews it has so far attracted in the press.
Another new programme to hit the screens this week was Lucy Gannon’s Hope and Glory on BBC1. Featuring Lenny Henry as the head teacher of a run-down inner city school, the first episode managed to attract 7.3 million viewers. This comfortably beat ITV’s Bad Girls, showing against Hope and Glory for the first half an hour, which had an audience of 6.85 million people.
