BT Creates High-Speed Internet Lines

BT has this morning announced plans to create a network of high-speed data lines capable of accessing services like the internet at between 10 and 40 times the speed of a conventional modem. The system, called asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), runs through ordinary phone lines, so streets and pavements will not have to be dug up in order to implement the system.

BT hopes that ADSL will be a catalyst for a wealth of new services, including e-commerce, interactive games, video conferencing and distance learning. London, Cardiff, Belfast, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow will be amongst the first places in the UK to receive the system, planned for next spring.
