UNM Confirms Possible CMP Sale To VNU
Following trade speculation, United News & Media (UNM) has confirmed that it is in discussions with business magazine publisher, VNU, over the possible sale of CMP Worldwide Media (Europe).
A deal would mean disposing of the UK and France interests of the IT publishing group so that UNM can concentrate on the US operations of CMP. UNM acquired CMP Media for £575 million in April this year (see United News & Media Acquires US Technology Group In £575m Deal) and the group was then combined with United’s Miller Freeman publishing operation.
If VNU were to secure the UK and France divisions of CMP, it would gain control of three currently rival titles. At present VNU’s PC Dealer, Network News and Computing compete with CMP’s Computer Reseller News, Network Week and Information Week respectively.
UNM says that further announcements will be made in due course.
