TV Viewing Summary W/E 04/07/99
The very final episode of time travelling sitcom, Goodnight Sweetheart, managed to pull in the biggest audience of its entire run, attracting 8.33 million viewers.
Eastenders this week saw a huge leap forward in the Saskia Duncan murder plotline (which was fast-rivalling Brookside‘s date rape storyline as the most drawn out and uninteresting plot in soapland). Monday’s episode of Eastenders, which saw monkey boy Matthew deciding to turn himself in to the police, was the most watched of the week with 13.49 million viewers; 13.37 million people saw the next day’s episode in which Matthew learnt a valuable lesson about video tape storage: namely don’t keep important videos in the back of hifi speakers if don’t want them to get wiped.
The Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final on BBC1, drew in the biggest audience of the fortnight. The match, which saw five-time champion Pete Sampras beat 1992 winner Andre Agassi, had an average audience of 6.96 million. Earlier in the day, the Women’s Final that saw Lindsay Davenport defeating Steffi Graf had an audience of 4.75 million before the rain delay and 6.13 million for the twenty-five minutes of the match after rain break.
Elsewhere this week’s James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever drew in the second highest total after Dr No for ITV, with 9.23 million viewers.
