Trinity Remains Top Of Regional Publishers League

Trinity remains the largest of the UK’s regional newspaper publishing groups, according to the latest figures from the Newspaper Society (NS). Johnston Press’ £266 million acquisition of Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers in June this year (see Johnston Wins Takeover Approval For Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers) pushed the group up from fifth to fourth place in the total circulation table.

The top 20 publishers now account for 78% of all regional press titles and 92% of total weekly circulation; this compares with 76% and 92% respectively as at 1 January 1999 (see Trinity Tops 1998 Regional Publishers Table). The total number of regional newspaper publishers has reduced, following takeovers and mergers, from 126 in January to 119 as at 1 July 1999.
