Newscom Keen To Join Bidding Race For Portsmouth & Sunderland
Newscom, the regional publisher which changed its name from Southern Newspapers last year (see Newsline), has announced that it is to join the bidding war for Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers. The group has confirmed that it is in preliminary discussions with the P&S board with a view to making an offer for its newspaper assets.
Newscom has submitted an application to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for a reference to the Monopolies and Merger Commission (MMC) so that its interest be considered alongside that of other parties.
Newscom is the fourth company to emerge as a possible bidder for the Portsmouth & Sunderland group. Newsquest joined the runnings at the beginning of the week (see Newsline). Charles Villiers, formerly head of Score, Scottish Radio’s newspaper division is also keen to mount a bid (see Newsline), and Portsmouth & Sunderland has already rejected a bid from Johnston Press (see Newsline).
