Internet Technology Group To Rival Dixon’s And Tesco’s Free Web Access

The Internet Technology Group (ITG), the UK independent internet provider whose subsidiaries include Global Internet and GX Networks, expects to announce a free internet service in the spring. The group is in discussions with a number of media and retail groups who wish to enter that segment of the market, and a major partnership is expected to be announced later this year.

Tesco announced this week that it is launching a free internet access service to its Clubcard holders (see Newsline), and the electrical retailer Dixons launched the first free service in September last year (see Newsline).

ITG also released its preliminary results for the year ended 31 October 1998. The group reported a pre-tax profit of £55,000 (1997: loss of £1.96 million) and earnings per share were at 0.12p.

Laurence Blackall, chief executive of ITG, said: “Making a profit for the first time is good news; but of greater significance is the substantial growth that we have achieved. With our national and international networks, we are very well placed to sustain this growth and become a leading player in the global connectivity market.”
