Netflix arrives in 130 more countries

Further adding to its quest for global domination, Netflix has launched in 130 more countries.

Speaking at this year’s CES event, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings said the world was witnessing “the birth of a new global Internet TV network”, as the subscription VOD service reaches 190 countries in more than 20 different languages – now including Arabic, Korean and simplified and traditional Chinese.

“With this launch, consumers around the world – from Singapore to St. Petersburg, from San Francisco to Sao Paulo – will be able to enjoy TV shows and movies simultaneously – no more waiting,” Hastings said.

“With the help of the Internet, we are putting power in consumers’ hands to watch whenever, wherever and on whatever device.”

Netflix currently has more than 70 million subscribers and offers 125 million hours of content.

While the service is not yet available in China, the company has said that it is continuing to “explore options”. However, due to VPN technology, which allows web users to disguise their location, it is estimated that some 30 million monthly users access the service in countries where it is not yet available – including 21.6 million in China, according to figures from GlobalWebIndex.

Additionally, due to government restrictions on American companies, Netflix will not be available in Crimea, North Korea and Syria.
