ITV Television Awards Score Ratings Success

Last nights National Television Awards were a success for ITV not only for the amount of awards it won, but also for record number of viewers tuning in. An average of 11.8 million witnessed Judy Finnigan’s outburst as she collected one of the network’s ten awards.

Unofficial overnight figures claim the programme was watched by a massive 50% share of the television audience, bad news for Judy but good news for ITV, which recorded its highest Tuesday night ratings for over two years. The programme peaked at 13.8 million – a 57.9% share.

Overall peak time average for the channel was 10.2m – a 45.2% share – and the network’s best Tuesday evening performance since the 1998 football World Cup finals.

The Cliff Richard Story which followed the awards gained a 45.7% share of the audience, a total of 8.7m people, and the Nightly News at 11pm, which was forced to move to an earlier slot by the ITC following slumping viewing figures (see News At Ten To Return To ITV), gained its biggest ratings since the programme began, with 6.2m people (45.7% share) tuning in.
