Internet Top Ten Still Dominated By Search Engines As New MMXI Methodology Introduced

The latest MMXI survey has revealed little change in the web domains most visited by users in the UK. Most of the top ten sites are search engines or ISP home pages, and Microsoft sites hold four out of the top six positions.

The exception to the rule is bbc.co.uk, the internationally successful site which has now returned to its number 8 slot, having been temporarily toppled by the summer sensation, Big Brother (see Big Brother Website Makes It Into August Top Ten). The number 10 spot previously occupied by the BBC has been filled by BTInternet.com, up into the top ten from 14 during the previous measurement period.

From the start of September this year, MMXI Europe has increased the sophistication of the telephone survey on which its panel of at home internet usage is weighted. Rather than collecting usage on a household by household basis, the survey now asks individuals to chart their online activity. This has led to an increase in the number of people using the internet during the October measurement period.
