Ad Revenues Up For Sunday Newspapers

Ad Revenues Up For Sunday Newspapers

Sunday newspapers have enjoyed a 10% increase in total advertising revenue over the past year, with broadsheet Sunday Business increasing from £1.5m to £2.5m , or 61%, and both the Sunday Times and the Sunday Telegraph registering a year on year increase of 16%.

While NRS figures show declining readership of national newspapers (see National Newspaper NRS Round-Up – May 2000), figures from CIA MediaLab show that in the Sunday papers, both the low earners like Sunday Business and the high revenue titles such as Mail on Sunday, which increased 14% to reach the largest total of all the titles at £120m, are experiencing growth.

The exceptions to the rule were the Sunday Express, whose drop of 2% meant it fell behind the Sunday Telegraph to become the fourth highest earner. The People also dropped, by 3%, keeping it down near the bottom of the revenue league. Ahead of it, another tabloid title, the Sunday Mirror, only managed a 1% increase year on year, while further up the table, the News of the World only increased its yearly advertising revenue by 2%.

The biggest advertiser in the Sunday nationals was Renault, although overall motors only made up 16% of total revenue. Finance accounted for 24% of the total spent on advertising although the highest spending financial company was Scottish Widows, which was only the fifth biggest spender overall.
