Cinema Admissions For April Up 30% On Last Year
Cinema admissions figures for April were up 30% year on year, resulting in the highest number of admissions for that month since 1972. An average of 3.04m per week went to see films including top titles Pokemon, Erin Brockovich and Kevin and Perry Go Large, which together grossed £23m.
The critically acclaimed American Beauty came fifth, grossing £3.6m. The film was partly responsible for February’s high monthly admissions figure (see Cinema Admissions For February Break Box Office Records) of 17.6m. April’s total audience for the month was 13m, making the total for the year so far 52m, a 17% increase compared to January-April last year.
The release this month of Gladiator is expected to boost the next set of figures from Carlton Screen Advertising. The film took $35m in its opening weekend in the US.
