Sport Falling Sales Means Cuts
The Sport confirmed today that it has cut the Saturday edition of the paper due to a fall in sales, making it difficult to justify the existence of a Saturday issue.
Circulation manager for the paper, Brian Burberry explains how during the football season sales on Saturday could hold their own, extending above 130,000, but as soon as the season finished they dropped dramatically.
The Sport has also been hit by the decision to cut 0898 ads from all editions in 1994, potentially losing the 65% advertising revenue extracted from it.
The paper hopes to attract mainstream advertisers to make up for the loss, and in order to do this they plan changes in editorial – reverting back to its original raunchier style.
Sales for the Sunday edition of the paper have also fallen dramatically with May 1989 claiming an impressive 503,647 (ABC May 89) compared with this year’s 251,911 (ABC May 93).
