Cinema Admissions For February Break Box Office Records

Cinema admissions during February were the highest since 1971, according to the latest figures from Carlton Screen Advertising. Total admissions for the month reached 17.6 million, an increase of 23% in a year-on-year analysis.

The success of Toy Story 2 boosted sales, achieving the highest opening weekend in the UK since Star Wars – The Phantom Menace. A total 6.1 million admissions was notched up for the week beginning 18 February – the highest individual week total ever measured by the Cinema Advertising Association. The film pulled in total admissions of £32.9 million during the month, making it not only the top grossing film of the year so far, but already the 8th biggest grossing film in history.

Also boosting box office records for February were Oscar winner American Beauty, which took £11.6 million, The Beach (£9.2million), House on Haunted Hill (£3.2 million), and Double Jeopardy (£2.9 million). Average weekly admissions were 4.26 million.
